Volunteer Sunflowers in the Garden

Our sunflowers have returned! No thanks to us.

When Elin arrived in March, we really put the kabash on anything to do with the garden this year. I refused to stretch things too thin by trying to juggle a new baby, renovation, all of our usual work, our toddler, our animals, our many projects and a garden. What do you think I am – nuts?

Luckily, nature works its own magic. Last year’s sunflowers were tilled into the ground in preparation for possible minimal gardening this year. That left us with some seeds pushed back into the soil. And – surprise – that’s all it takes to get something to grow.

The sunflowers have made a really great return despite not being cared for…like, at all.

They’re absolutely stunning to see towering over the south garden. Unlike last year, you can actually spot the many varieties I originally planted. They are all shapes and sizes and have been cycling through at their own paces.

The very best part: Isai has learned “yellow.” He sprints through the garden pointing and yelling “yellow!,” “mama! yellow!” It. Is. The. Best.
