Fresh from the Crazy Garden

Let’s be real – the grass in this garden has gone full crazy.

Anna, Sarah and I spent a good chunk of the day on Sunday trying to pull the grass out of the tomatoes, carrots and onions. The area we made it through looks 10,000% better – however there is still a ton of garden we didn’t get to. In the heat, I’m grateful for any amount of progress. That doesn’t change the overwhelming nature of it all though!

Despite the insanity of the weeds – seeing produce pop up is super fun.

The lettuce continues to go to seed – sending tall stalks straight into the air. We attempted to eat a bit off of them but it’s extremely bitter now. I’ve been breaking off the shorter plants and tossing them to the chickens. Nothing really goes to waste around here – it will all go back into the earth in one form or another.

The radishes have gone to seed too, but we’ve been continuing to pull the roots and add them to salads. They’re wonderfully spicy. The seed pods on top of super interesting – I’ve never seen a plant quite like it. I’m loving seeing the full lifecycle of these foods and plants take place right before our eyes.

The cucumbers are a bit of a hot mess. Their vines are winding through the grasses and overtaking the melons. We failed to get our trellises into place early so now they’re climbing across the ground. We’re hoping for the best here but really not sure of what to expect. So far, there’s a handful of vegetables getting ready to be plucked.

Despite getting mowed a couple of times – the sweet basil is thriving along the edges of the gardens. When we use the torch for flame weeding, the basil scent wafts through the air. Even when mowing it, the fresh fragrances is amazing. We’ve pulled bits here and there but I do believe it’s about time for a mass harvest and some pesto!

The crowing jewels of the North garden are our compost squashes. The previous owner had a couple of dried up squash veggies in the compost when we moved in. The pile hasn’t been turned as often as it should be, so those seed started exploding! We’re already seeing tiny squashes growing beautifully. It’s honestly too awesome to stop it so we’re just going to see how this goes and start again when the season ends.

Yes – it’s chaos. But it’s our chaos. And, generally, in between the weeds and madness – it’s absolutely awesome. Which is kind of the theme of our lives lately.
