This week’s cold snap was for the birds.
We spent the weekdays cooped up in the house and snuggling under warm blankets. I continued to work from home while keeping my fingers crossed that all of the plants in the ground could survive the chill. So far, so good.
The weekend, though, has brought us a bit more sun and productivity.
We’ve been planning for months that April 25-28th would be our “put all of the plants in the ground” weekend. Halfway through – I’m in awe of exactly how much work planting the garden can be. Even with help from Anna and Aunt Brenda – the squats, bending, lifting, digging and more is taking a toll. I can feel every single muscle in my body.
The garden is looking great though! We called a few small audibles from our original plant (I’ll have to write another post to document those for later!). For the most part, though, things went together pretty seamlessly.
We still have tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers in the greenhouse waiting for their chance to go be planted. Aaron read a sign at the nursery in town that said it’s still too early. Apparently we’re taking nursery advice quite seriously now.
Life was generally eventful this past week. In addition to finishing the chicken coop and setting up my concrete table in the garden – Isai learned to crawl. We dropped some of the carpet from the master bedroom into the basement so that he has plenty of practice space now. He also learned to suck his baby food straight out of the pouch – which has made for WAY cleaner meals.
While we worked on the garden, Isai got most of his toys pulled out to an outdoor rug by the garden table. I strapped his jumper to a tree limb in the shade and he spent a great chunk of the afternoon hopping about while we planted. Learning to juggle an energetic infant with farm work has been quite a lesson – but it’s awesome to see him so comfortable with the chaos around here.
Two of our calves have continued to fight scours through the week. As the weekend comes to close, they’re actually looking the best they’ve been for a bit. A change in formula, regular electrolytes and some sunshine have helped them tons.
The chickens are living their best life right now. The new coop is rocking and we’ve already started Phase 2 of the chicken run build. I’m excited to document Aaron’s genius concept as it comes to life – but for now, you just have to be tempted with this vague little teaser.
The farm continues to fill with life as the sunshine reveals more buds, sprouts and greenery all about. With all of the new seedlings in the garden, I’m super excited to see what will pop up next!
