The Green, Green Garden

After some intense weeding over the past couple of weeks, the garden is looking great. We already have some grass and other weeds creeping into areas – but for the most part, things are as green as can be.

Like green green. Super green.

The arugula is going to seed but still tastes great in salads. The potato plants nearby are still growing strong and green.

Everything is fresh and growing awesome. The lettuce, arugula and radishes are ready for harvest as we want them. The leafy plants of the potatoes, tomatoes, nasturtium, cucumbers and peas look bright and healthy.

The plants on the left are supposed to be broccoli. Seems like the cabbage starts were mislabeled. No clue, honestly. On the right, though, the tomatoes are doing great. And they’re definitely tomatoes.

Seeing the plants thrive makes me happier than ever that we’re trying to tackle such a crazy undertaking this summer. There is still plenty of work to be done, but it’s completely worth it so far.

The sugar snap peas are getting a great start up the brand spanking new trellis that Farmer Crossley built. The sweet basil is coming up thick along the edge of the North garden and the cut flower garden along the East side is starting to come to life!

We’re already making plans to enjoy the fall with the boatloads of pumpkins and squash in the south garden. The trees are already loaded with apples that will be a delicious addition too as long as we can navigate the Cedar-Apple Rust.

In the South garden, corn and beans are fighting their way through tons of grass. The zucchinis, winter squash and pumpkins are thriving. Plus, the sunflowers are coming up!

We still have tons of weeding ahead of us – especially getting the south garden with the corn and beans under control. The space between the rows allowed a bit too much grass to take root and flame weeding has been getting a smidge too close to the plants. We’re exploring ideas for how to create some type of heat shield. In the mean time, it’s getting a little out of hand.
