I’ve done a bit of reading about various herbs and their benefits for the chickens’ health. Turns out – tossing some rosemary or mint into the boxes now and again is a great way to keep the flock healthy, disease-free and happy. Win-win-win.
Earlier this Spring, Anna planted a bunch of herbs in the garden box next to our deck. The box gets a ton of water from the roof run-off, but with the trees thickening quickly, it’s not getting much sun anymore. The herbs are growing, but not quite as quickly or abundantly as we’d hoped.
I figured this presents a good opportunity for us to try a set of herbs in the direct sunlight to see if that changes the game.
Using some old terra cotta pots I brought from our Kansas City house, I arranged a vignette next to the chicken coop. I had a handful of plants in the greenhouse that hadn’t quite made it to a pot yet, so this project also doubled for clearing out the last of those.
The new little potted plant collection will give me quick access to the herbs the chickens will love while also bringing some of that beautiful terra cotta color out to the garden. I love that the stacked and arranged pots and plants will bring some color and fun to the coop. Plus, they’re completely portable so I can always rearrange if the new landscaping doesn’t end up looking quite right!
