Today, Aaron and my dad moved a dozer onto the farm. They’re prepping to carve a new pond into the land between our pastures – giving the cattle a natural and readily available water source for winter.
The pond has been in the plans for the farm since we arrived here a year and a half ago. It’s been a long time coming. Then, when the extreme cold snap hit last winter and we spent two weeks breaking ice and hauling water to try to keep the animals hydrated – it became overly apparent that the pond was more needed than ever.
Fast forward to today and it feels like we’re finally on our way to tackling one of the biggest projects lingering on Aaron’s want-to-do’s list.
Dad and Aaron loaded the dozer and hauled it about 20 minutes to get to our gravel road. Then, they had to unload in the road and drive it a bit up the hill to get it onto our property. Just moving this thing is a lot of work and takes a lot of time.
Once the dozer was in the pasture, we took Isai out to meet it. For a kid that has a digging obsession, he was surprisingly star struck by meeting a real dozer face-to-tracks. He refused to touch it. Didn’t want to sit on it. Wouldn’t even talk about it.
We took a few photos. Then, Papa Bear popped some ear muffs on him and loaded him up for his first ride. After that, he was hooked.
We’re going to have a real hard time keeping him out of the pasture during this project.
